Welcome to the Nucleic Acids Research Facilities!
Nucleic Acids Research Facilities (NARF) currently include four core laboratories, the Gene Synthesis Core, the DNA Sequencing Core, the Real Time PCR Core, and the MicroArraying Core. NARF was completely renovated during the 2001-02 academic year, and now occupies approximately 2500 square feet including five main laboratories, and several smaller labs and offices on the fifth floor of Sanger Hall.
The DNA Sequencing Core maintains four Automated DNA Sequencers, including an ABI 3730xl DNA Analyzer, ABI 3130xl Genetic Analyzer and an Amersham Megabace 96 capillary instrument. Other assets include 96-well instruments for parallel culture of bacterial clones and purification of plasmid templates. The DNA Sequencing Core is managed by a doctoral trained investigator with over 10 years of experience in high throughput DNA sequencing, and is operated with additional technical support.
The Gene Synthesis Core maintains a Perceptive Biosystems (now ABI) DNA synthesizer, HPLC instrumentation for purification, and a Beckman UV/Vis Spectrophotometer. Standard, fluorescent, biotinylated or other modified DNA is synthesized for all VCU investigators. The Gene Synthesis Core is managed by a master's trained molecular biologist with technical support.
The MicroArraying Core maintains an Affymetrix GeneChipTM System for gene expression analysis using standard (human, mouse, rat, etc.) arrays. A spotted array system comprised of a BioRobotics TAS II MicroArraying Spotter and a Packard ScanArray 5000 XL Scanner is available for generation of custom arrays. The MicroArraying Core is maintained and operated by a Ph.D.trained scientist with technical support.
The Real Time PCR Core maintains an ABI 7900 TaqManTM Sequence Detector. The facility performs standard real time PCR for mRNA quantification and sequence detection PCR for genetic analysis by SNPs. The RT PCR Core is managed by a master's trained molecular biologist with technical support.
